FARGO — Sanford Health's genetic health counselors work to help patients better understand how their genes affect their health.
The tests look at genes that are passed down through the family and can determine if you have a higher risk to develop certain cancers.
The counselors say they can use this information to catch and hopefully prevent cancer.
They can also do targeted treatment for people who have certain genetic patterns.
"Our ultimate goal here is to be proactive so that if people are at that higher risk, we can be screening them more closely, or even consider surgeries to catch cancer at early stages, which typically will make it easier to treat or to even prevent cancer in some in some people." says Meghann Reardon, a genetic counselor for Sanford Health
