WALKER, Minn. - Emergency personnel again used a hovercraft Friday night to rescue people after their vehicle broke through the ice on Leech Lake.
Deputies from the Cass County Sheriff's Office and the Walker Fire Department responded to a call that came in at about 9:20 p.m. Friday night of a vehicle that had fallen through the ice at Steamboat Bay, according to a release from the sheriff''s office. The SUV had submerged so that only the rear of the vehicle was exposed, the release said. Four people successfully escaped the vehicle and climbed onto an attached trailer, which had not fallen through the ice. They were rescued using the Walker Fire Department' hovercraft, the release said. Two adults were taken to Sanford Bemidji Medical Center for observation; no other injuries were reported.
On Friday morning, the hovercraft also rescued two people whose pickup partially submerged on Leech Lake just before 8 a.m.
