GRANDIN, N.D. - A semitrailer caught fire and burned to the ground on Interstate 29 between Grandin and Hillsboro this morning, shutting down both northbound lanes from 10 to 11:45 a.m., the North Dakota Highway Patrol said.
The semi had some type of mechanical failure that caused the fire, the patrol said. The semi and trailer burned to the ground on the right shoulder of I-29 about one mile north of Grandin or 11 miles south of Hillsboro.
The fire and reduced visibility prompted the patrol to close the northbound lanes and divert traffic onto County Road 81.
The left lane of northbound I-29 reopened at 11:45 a.m. The right lane will remain closed until the scene is clear and debris is removed, the patrol said.
