HARWOOD, N.D. - Classes at Harwood Elementary were dismissed Friday morning due to a sewer backup shortly after 9.
The combination of a strong sewer smell and the fact that the school couldn't use running water, flush toilets or make lunch prompted the sudden closure, Principal Jerry Barnum said.
Parents of the 105 first- through fifth-graders were notified of the closing by
e-mail and phone, said West Fargo School District Assistant Superintendent Louise Dardis.
Dardis said she was impressed with how quickly parents responded to pick up or make arrangements for students.

Buses took students home shortly before noon.
The backup, which happened in a utilities room, was expected to be taken care of by the end of Friday, Dardis said.
