HANKINSON, N.D. - The man killed in a weekend shooting here has been identified as 35-year-old Brian Eugene Smith of Hankinson, according to a news release from the Richland County Sheriff's Office.
Smith was shot by Robert Arends, 55, in Arends' driveway, the Sheriff's Office said.
"The two individuals involved did not know each other," the release stated. "Robert Arends is claiming self-defense."
No arrests have been made or charges filed.
The shooting happened about 4 a.m. Sunday. Smith was pronounced dead at a hospital in Breckenridge, Minn. His body has been sent to the North Dakota medical examiner's office in Bismarck for an autopsy.

Sheriff Larry Leshovsky said few details are being released because the incident remains under investigation.
