South Dakota reports 10 COVID-19 deaths as active cases triple in two weeks

The active COVID-19 case count in the state reached a new all-time high Thursday, rising 2,053 to 24,796. On Dec. 30, the state reported 8,323 active cases. Current hospitalizations climbed to a high not seen in over a year, rising six to 343, the highest tally since late December 2020.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — South Dakota health officials on Thursday, Jan. 13, reported 10 state residents had died with COVID-19, while active cases have tripled over the past two weeks.

The 10 fatalities reported Thursday raised the COVID-19 death toll in the state to 2,584, with 58 reported in January thus far, according to the South Dakota Department of Health.

The active COVID-19 case count in the state reached a new all-time high Thursday, rising 2,053 to 24,796. On Dec. 30, the state reported 8,323 active cases. Current hospitalizations climbed to a high not seen in over a year, rising six to 343, the highest tally since late December 2020.

The following are the state Department of Health COVID-19 case rates, deaths, hospitalizations and vaccinations tracked by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as of Wednesday. All data is the latest available but should be considered preliminary and could be updated at a later date by health officials.

  • INITIAL DOSE ADMINISTERED (IF 2-DOSE VACCINE): 637,997 people, 72.1% of state's population*
  • FULLY VACCINATED: 511,529 people, 57.8% of state's population
  • BOOSTER DOSE RECEIVED: 186,739 people, 36.5% of state's vaccinated population

*Note: The percentage presented here via the CDC differs from the state Department of Health percentage posted on its online dashboard, because the department's data indicates percentage of state population age 5 and older, not the state's total population.
