Southeast ND man bags mountain lion in Ransom County
FORT RANSOM , N.D. — A Barnes County hunter killed a mountain lion in Ransom County, around 60 miles southwest of Fargo, on Tuesday, March 5.
Jarrett Christoferson of Litchville, N.D., who went after the 130 pound mountain lion after receiving a tip from a friend, calls the kill the trophy of a lifetime. With the help of a group of a friends and some hunting dogs, Christoferson drove the animal up into a tree and shot it.
Christoferson said the big cat had killed more than 10 deer in the area without eating them.
"Granted it's a predator, but to kill the deer for sport and to not utilize them, that's an animal that needs to be taken out of our system, especially when we're trying to get our deer population back up," he said.
The mountain lion's body has been sent to the North Dakota Game and Fish Department to be examined. Christoferson, who has been hunting since his childhood, said he plans to get the mountain lion made into a full-body mount when it's returned by state officials.
Christoferson said he's gotten requests from people to hunt mountain lions on their property after seeing his Facebook post of the kill. Right now he's helping a friend hunt another one of the wild cats.
