The Fargo City Commission will conduct a special meeting at 8 a.m. Saturday to give tentative approval to contracts for building clay dikes in several Fargo neighborhoods.

Approval of the contracts is contingent on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers participating in the project, but Fargo officials believe the support "will be right there," said Pat Zavoral, Fargo city administrator.

Zavoral said levee work will be done in the North Oaks neighborhood in north Fargo and the Timberline subdivision in south Fargo, areas he said start to see water pooling in low areas when the river level reaches 25 feet.

He said officials will watch conditions to determine how soon sandbags need to be delivered to various parts of the city.

"We still haven't seen much movement in river levels here. Do we have another week? I don't know, but we'll be staying on top of it," Zavoral said.

The city has planned out how sandbags will be delivered, he said.

"We've gone through at least two tabletop exercises in how we're going to coordinate the delivery of sandbags in neighborhoods, so it's pretty coordinated," he said.

"Last year, we had some difficulties having bags and volunteers arrive at the same time.

"This year, because we've got a head start, we'll deliver sandbags a couple days in advance of needing the volunteers," Zavoral added.
