Spring storm causes power outages and concern for drivers in Grand Forks

GRAND FORKS — Ditches around Grand Forks County and beyond that have filled with water from the spring thaw have now been covered in ice and snow by a spring snowstorm.

The Grand Forks Police Department said its biggest concern is for drivers that slip off the road and into the water. While there are fewer drivers on the road because of closures and social distancing due to coronavirus, the danger is still there.

"Look at this as mother nature's way of encouraging physical distancing," said Grand Forks police Lt. Derik Zimmel.

The snowstorm has also caused some electric outages. 1,700 Xcel Energy customers in the region were without power for more than an hour Wednesday night, April 1.

Thursday in East Grand Forks, the power went out a few times for one-third of East Grand Forks Water and Light customers. The outage lasted for about 20 minutes.
