ST. PAUL – The St. Paul police officer shot by a man threatening “suicide by cop” was doing well Saturday, according to St. Paul police.
Michael Talley, an 18-year veteran of the force, was taken to Regions Hospital on Friday after being shot in the cheek.
Melissa Leistikow, a four-month veteran of the force, also was involved in the incident.
On Saturday, police identified the weapon Robert “Scott” Wood of St. Paul used as a Benjamin Trail XL .25-caliber air rifle with scope.
Dave Titus, the president of the St. Paul Police Federation, said: “The weapon used is a very dangerous weapon and it can inflict very serious injury. The officers out there did an outstanding job in the middle of a residential neighborhood. The suspect was obviously very dangerous, a threat to everyone around. We pray for a quick recovery for this officer.”
Wood, 53, eventually surrendered to SWAT officers after barricading himself in his North End home for two hours.
