West Fargo police officer Peter Nielsen was recently honored by the state Veterans of Foreign Wars organization as Law Enforcement Officer of the Year.

The state VFW acted on a recommendation from West Fargo's VFW, which recognized Nielsen as its Police Officer of the Year, a news release said.

Nielsen, who has patrolled West Fargo streets since December 1999, worked as a security forces specialist when he was in the U.S. Air Force. He served from 1993 to 1997.

In addition to patrolling West Fargo streets, Nielsen trains new police officers and has numerous recognitions for outstanding service, including the Early Bird Award for assisting in a pre-hospital delivery of a baby in 2006.
