Several local students advanced Wednesday to elimination round competition at the National Speech and Debate Tournament in Charlotte, N.C.

The tournament, sponsored by the National Forensics League, runs through Friday.

About 2,500 students from around the nation are taking part in the event. The top 60 in each category advanced to the elimination round.

Local students who made it past the first eight rounds to the octafinals are:

- Peter Gulsvig, Moorhead Senior High School, humorous interpretation.

- Brady Littlefield and Natalia Espejo, Shanley, policy debate (both undefeated.)

- Paul Storm, Shanley, Lincoln-Douglas debate (undefeated.)

The National Forensics League grants scholarships to tournament finalists.
