MINNEAPOLIS -- A brief but heavy burst of snow turned Twin Cities roads into a slippery mess on Monday.
The surprise storm dumped up to 3 inches on parts of the metro area. More than 100 accidents were reported, including a multicar pileup on Interstate 94 in St. Paul. Twenty-seven of the accidents led to injuries, one of them serious.
The National Weather Service didn't add snow to its forecast until about 8:30 a.m., a little more than an hour before the snow hit.
"It was a very narrow, short-lived event," meteorologist Rich Naistat said. "We liken it to a summertime downpour; it affects a small area for a small period of time. Of course the impact was big here today because it was right over the Twin Cities."
