The Clay County Sheriff's Department, bedeviled in recent weeks by rural burglaries, caught a break Monday with a helpful phone call - from a suspect.
"They always seemed to hit on Sunday night," said Clay County Sheriff Bill Bergquist, referring to thieves who hit farmsteads in Clay and Norman counties, making off with tools and other items from shops and outbuildings.
This past weekend, the Clay County Sheriff's Department deployed extra deputies to patrol rural roads in unmarked vehicles.
Around 2:30 a.m. Monday, the effort paid off.
A deputy came upon a vehicle parked near a rural Glyndon residence and after checking around determined the property had been burglarized.

A police dog searched the area and authorities found two backpacks filled with tools taken from an outbuilding.
That's where things stood until later Monday morning, when the owner of the vehicle that was found at the farmstead phoned authorities to report that his car had been stolen.
Deputies and investigators paid the man a visit at his Glyndon home.
They ended up interviewing the residents of the home, which led to a search.
Bergquist said investigators seized enough property to fill about three pickups.
By the end of the day, some of the items had been tied to burglaries in Clay and Norman counties, said Bergquist.
Two men residing at the residence, Shaun Patrick Carlson, 20, and David Leo Erickson, 19, were arrested, Bergquist said.
Both men were being held in the Clay County Jail Monday night pending charges, said Bergquist.
