Forum photographer Darren Gibbins received a second-place award Sunday for a honey illustration photo from the National Press Photographers Association's Best Of Photojournalism 2004 Contest. Judging for the international contest was held at The Poynter Institute for Media Studies at St. Petersburg, Fla., this week and included the entries of more than 30,500 images from the United States and overseas.

Gibbins' award was in the conceptual illustration category, which is defined by the contest organizers this way: "When illustrating, the idea is key. We seek to reward outstanding execution, without digital means, for an idea that raises the bar on creativity and execution in the area of the illustrative. This category is not for digitally created images."

Judges for the still image categories came from the ranks of Fortune Magazine, The Seattle Times, The Rocky Mountain News and Reuters news service.

Gibbins is a 1995 graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead.

He's been a photographer at daily newspapers for nine years, the last four at The Forum.
