Police arrested a 16-year-old Fargo boy who they said robbed a Fargo Kum 'n Go store early Tuesday.

The boy threatened a convenience store clerk at about 3:20 a.m.,  claiming there were people outside the store who would hurt or kill the clerk if he did not give the boy an undisclosed amount of money, police said.

The suspect -- who was under the influence of alcohol and did not appear to be armed -- then fled the store at 1318 25th Ave. S. on foot, said Fargo Lt. Tod Dahle.

The clerk was not harmed, he said.

With the help of surveillance video tapes and witness interviews, officers were able to spot the suspect riding a bike at about 6 a.m. in the 1800 block of South University Drive, Dahle said.

The suspect, who has had previous encounters with Fargo police but nothing serious, was arrested without incident, Dahle said.

On one occasion the boy ran away from home, he said.

The suspect will probably be charged with robbery and being a minor under the influence of alcohol, he said.

Dahle said he didn't know the exact amount of money recovered or stolen.

Those stores rarely have a lot of money in the till, he said.

Convenience store robbers "pay some real penalties for not much," Dahle said.

Fargo police solve about 80 percent of the city's armed robberies, Dahle said.
