Using a pedometer is about as easy as putting one foot in front of the other, but the following tips from Web site Pedometer.com can maximize the device's accuracy and effectiveness.

- Set the pedometer to your stride length. You can go by the average of 2.5 feet for men and 2.2 for women, or measure the distance of 10 of your steps and then divide the result by 10.

- For the most accurate measurement, wear the pedometer on your waistband (or hosiery band) and line it up directly above your knee.

- Record your daily and weekly activity so you can chart your progress.

- Analyze your results and set goals accordingly. A 20-percent increase from your first week's activity is a realistic, attainable goal. Brainstorm ways you can adjust your daily routine to increase the number of steps you take.

- Keep in mind pedometers are most effective for measuring walking steps. They won't work accurately for running because the heel and toe strike the ground hard enough to register extra steps. They also can't record activity from biking, rowing or other seated activities.
