- Keep tools properly cleaned and lubricated.

- Keep tools out of weather elements and store them out of the way when not in use.

- If the storage area is damp, such as a basement, install a dehumidifier and keep tools covered with a film of rust-inhibiting oil.

- Protect metal gardening tools from rust by pouring motor oil into a bucket of sand. Dip the clean tool blade into the bucket, and work it up and down a few times to clean any stubborn soil and lubricate the blade. You can store your tools in the bucket, too.

- Never throw tools into the toolbox. Handle them carefully to avoid dulling edges and nicking surfaces.

- Whenever possible, hang tools with cutting edges separately to keep them from getting nicked or dulled.

- Rub wooden handles with a rag soaked in boiled linseed oil. This will prevent drying and cracking that can cause splinters to form.

- Make sure screws or bolts that connect the tool to the handle are fastened securely.

- Purchase a carrying case for your power tools to protect them and to store their accessories.
