MAHNOMEN, Minn. - Thirteen railroad cars went off the tracks, spilling vegetable oil in the city of Mahnomen on Monday.
The accident occurred about 5:30 p.m. north of the Washington Avenue crossing. Traffic had to be re-routed as at least two crossings were blocked by the Canadian Pacific train.
A release from the Mahnomen County Sheriff's Office said at least one car was leaking liquid. Sand was hauled in from a temporary dike to prevent the oil from flowing into a nearby culvert.
A crossing at Highway 200 remained closed Monday night.
None of the train cars was hauling hazardous material. The cause of the derailment has not yet been determined.
