Two rescued from truck's roof on Otter Tail Lake

FERGUS FALLS, Minn. - Thin ice on Otter Tail Lake claimed a Battle Lake man's pickup truck while the two occupants were rescued from its roof late Friday night.

FERGUS FALLS, Minn. – Thin ice on Otter Tail Lake claimed a Battle Lake man’s pickup truck while the two occupants were rescued from its roof late Friday night.

Otter Tail County Sheriff’s officials said Robert Karst, 75, called to report he and an acquaintance were stranded on the roof of Karst’s partially submerged pickup.

The pickup had broken through a thin layer of ice on the northwest corner of Otter Tail Lake near a pressure ridge.

The truck had fallen through a shallow pool of water that had formed near the ridge and had been kept from falling through by thicker ice underneath.

Karst and his acquaintance had managed to crawl onto the roof of the truck and call for help.
