United Way expects greater need as annual school supply drive kicks off

FARGO - With the opening of school fast-approaching, the United Way of Cass-Clay launched its annual school supply drive Tuesday.

The 13th annual drive aims to provide 4,500 children with new backpacks and school supplies.

"With rising gas and grocery prices, we anticipate the need for school supplies to be greater than at any other time in the past," said Sherri Thomsen, United Way of Cass-Clay president. "Last year, more than 4,600 students were equipped for the first day of school with backpacks and supplies. Our goal this year is 4,500, but we hope to once again surpass that number."

Q. Who is eligible to receive supplies?

A. Any student, kindergarten to 12th grade, residing in Cass and Clay counties is eligible.

Families are asked to complete a registration form before receiving supplies.

What supplies are needed?

Backpacks, markers, colored pencils, 1-inch binders, scissors, pencil cases, pencils, notebooks, pens, erasers, folders and loose-leaf paper.

Where can supplies be donated?

School supplies and backpacks can be dropped off at these locations:

  • West Acres Shopping Center, 3902 13th Ave. S., Fargo
  • Gate City Bank, all locations
  • Moorhead Center Mall, 510 Center Ave.
  • Walmart, all locations
  • First International Bank and Trust, all locations
  • Elite Therapeutic Massage, 1121 Westrac Drive S., Fargo
  • United Way of Cass-Clay, 219 7th St. S., Fargo
  • Starion Financial, all locations
  • Fargodome, 1800 N. University Drive

When and where will supplies be distributed?

Supplies will be given out in three metro communities.

  • 8 a.m. to noon Aug. 13 at the Fargodome
  • 4 to 8 p.m. Aug. 18 at Concordia College Memorial Auditorium, 12th Avenue and Seventh Street South, Moorhead; and West Fargo Veterans Arena, 1201 7th Ave. E.

How can financial donations be given?

  • By mail: Send check or cash to United Way of Cass-Clay-UWCC, PO Box 1609, Fargo, ND 58107
  • In person: Drop off a check or cash to the United Way of Cass-Clay at 219 7th St. S., Fargo.

How can people volunteer?

Volunteers will be needed Aug. 1-18 to organize supplies and pack backpacks at the Fargodome.

On Aug. 13 and 18, volunteers will also be needed to distribute supplies.
