- In June 2005, two mountain bikers on western North Dakota's Maah Daah Hey trail came face to face with a lion, eventually chasing it off by throwing rocks and sticks and screaming at the cougar, and using their bicycles as shields.
- In October 2006, a man and his girlfriend walking near the Missouri River encountered a lion. The man, who was carrying a shotgun for pheasants, shot and killed the cougar.
- In November 2006, a lion was found hiding in a culvert near a walking path in New Salem, a town outside of the Badlands and less than 40 miles west of Bismarck. A veterinary assistant shot and killed the animal.
- In March this year, a lion attacked a cow in a northwestern North Dakota pasture, killing it.
- In April, a dead mountain lion was found frozen in the ice at Lake Sakakawea, a large reservoir on the Missouri River.

- In the past half year, four lions have become caught in bobcat traps or snares in western North Dakota. One trapper involved said he had been in the business more than 20 years and had never before had a lion wander into a trap.
