A 6-year-old boy who was crossing a south Fargo street after getting off a school bus was struck Friday afternoon by a car and taken to the hospital, Fargo police said.

A Fargo school bus stopped on 25th Avenue South at 15th Street with its lights on and stop arm out when the boy was hit, Sgt. Ross Renner said.

A two-door Pontiac Grand Prix, driven by was eastbound on 25th Avenue South and it appears that the car struck the boy as he was crossing the street, Renner said.

The driver of the Pontiac was identified as Joan Wraalstad, 75, from Fargo.

The boy was taken to Essentia Health with unknown injuries. His name has not been released.

The initial dispatch call said the boy couldn't move, but Renner said at the scene, the extent of his injuries wasn't known.

Friday evening, the Fargo Police said a preliminary investigation revealed Wraalstad allegedly failed to stop for the school bus.

The case is still pending investigation and charges may or may not be forthcoming, police said.

Under City of Fargo ordinance Unlawful Passing of a School Bus is a non-criminal violation with $50 fine.

Renner said the bus company was transferring some students to other buses. Other students were picked up at the scene by their parents, including one tearful mother who embraced her child after he got off the bus.

"Obviously, anytime we have an incident like this, it's very emotionally charged for all the parents that have kids that are on buses," Renner said.
