UPDATED 10:05 a.m.

WEST FARGO - The driver of a car that hit a West Fargo school bus this morning told police he fell asleep at the wheel, Officer Stacy Dawkins said.

The bus was unoccupied except for the driver, and no one was injured, she said.

Witnesses told police the northbound passenger car crossed the center line and struck the southbound bus in the 2600 block of Sheyenne Street at about 6:52 a.m., Dawkins said.

The bus swerved to the right to try to avoid the collision, she said. The car hit the bus on the driver's side, and the bus ended up halfway in the ditch.

Damage to the bus was estimated at $12,000 to $15,000, she said.

The car's driver, Tyler Maurstad, 18, of Horace, N.D., was cited for care required, Dawkins said.
