FARGO - Rainy weather moved out of the Red River Valley this morning, leaving behind 1 to nearly 2.5 inches of precipitation in many areas and making room for sunshine today.

Hector International Airport in Fargo picked up 2.11 inches of rain from 7 a.m. Monday to 7 a.m. today, while 2.24 inches fell across the river in Moorhead, the highest 24-hour total reported to the National Weather Service as of 7:45 a.m.

The rainy Labor Day set records across North Dakota, and just to the south of it.

The weather service says rainfall records for the date fell in Bismarck, Minot, Dickinson and Fargo, and also in the South Dakota city of Mobridge.

Bismarck had 2.12 inches, breaking the city's Sept. 6 record of 1.32 inches set in 1981.

Minot had 1.64 inches, bettering the mark of 0.66 inches set in 2000.

Dickinson had 0.8 inches, breaking the record of 0.33 inches set in 2001.

Fargo saw 1.99 inches of rain Monday. That city's record for the date had been 1.04 inches in 1937.

Mobridge on Monday had 1.22 inches of rain. That city's previous record for the date was 1.15 inches in 1992.

In Fargo-Moorhead, cloudy conditions will be replaced by sunshine later today, but the high is only expected to reach 60 degrees, with a brisk northwest wind.

"It's going to be a chilly one," said Pete Speicher, meteorologist at the weather service office in Grand Forks.

Wednesday's forecast calls for sunny conditions with a high near 67 and an east-northeast wind of 3 to 6 mph. The rest of the week will bring more unsettled conditions, Speicher said.
