VALLEY CITY, N.D. - The City Commission here voted unanimously this afternoon, 5-0, to accept a release settlement and release agreement with Police Chief Dean Ross, ending his 38 years with the city.

The value of the settlement, which includes salaries and vacation pay benefits, is about $76,000.

Ross was suspended from his post without pay on Sept. 9. He was accused of misspending or misappropriating thousands of dollars in taxpayer funds and funneling the proceeds to CounterAct and the Valley City Police Association, groups that he either oversaw or had ties with.

Ross has also been accused of insubordination and failure to properly perform his duties as police chief.

Ross had been on paid suspension for about two months before the Sept. 9 decision.

Ross is also being investigated by the state Bureau of Criminal Investigation, city officials have said, but they have not detailed what that investigation entails.
