SAN DIEGO – A baby hippopotamus called Devi explored San Diego Zoo's pool last Thursday, accompanied by her mother, Funani, as visitors stopped to watch the rare scene.
The eight-week old hippopotamus paddled through the pool's shallow water before venturing underwater with the support of her mother, attracting the attention of curious visitors who could see the animals through a glass window.
According to the zoo keepers, Devi was aware of her observers as she enthusiastically swam around the pool thanks to a membrane that protects hippopotamuses' eyes, enabling them to see underwater.
Zoo keepers have only had rare glimpses of the baby hippo since her birth in late March, as her protective mother has been keeping the her hidden in vegetation surrounding the pool.
