About 30 friends and volunteers helped repair a Fargo police officer's roof Friday and Saturday while he is stationed in Fort Riley, Kan., awaiting deployment to Iraq.
"He volunteered to serve our country," said organizer Mark Friese of his friend Todd Aannerud. "The least we can do is volunteer a weekend to help him out."
Friese along with Josh Dietz and Fargo's Family Assistance Center began organizing help when he heard Aannerud's roof was leaking into his dinning room. "I told him that he's got a friend looking after his house while he's gone," said Friese, who met Aannerud through the National Guard.
Friese said the project took about a week to organize, but stressed that it wouldn't have happened without the help of Dietz, co-owner of Fargo's Dietz Construction and a National Guard member who recently returned from Iraq. "Josh Dietz said 'Yep, we'll get it done,'" he said.
"There were a lot of people who helped out that are getting ready to deploy themselves," he said. "They had a lot of personal affairs to get ready and they were out there helping."
