A Wadena, Minn., police officer died of an apparent heart attack Thursday night after he and another officer arrested a man at the scene of a domestic disturbance call.

Officer Peter Resch, 47, collapsed in the hallway of an apartment building after the arrest and attempts to revive him were unsuccessful, the Wadena Police Department said in a press release.

The incident started about 8:14 p.m. when Resch, a 15-year veteran, responded to a call at Wadena Square Apartments on 2nd Street Northwest.

Resch and a Verndale police officer, entered the building and after talking to the complainant, approached the 19-year-old suspect at his apartment.

The suspect resisted arrest, police said, and was handcuffed and searched after a brief struggle.

As officers escorted the suspect from the building, Resch collapsed while suffering a cardiac arrest, police said.

Officers on the scene administered CPR and other life support measures with Tri-County Hospital ambulance personnel. Resch was later pronounced dead at Tri-County Hospital, the police department said.

The Wadena County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident and an autopsy is being performed today to determine the cause of death.

The Sebeka Police Department and Minnesota State Patrol assisted during the incident, Wadena police said.
