VERGAS, Minn. - A pilot escaped injury just south of here after crashing his ultra-lite plane on Saturday afternoon.
Mark Spiekermeier, 60, of Wahpeton, N.D., was attempting to take off from the water on nearby Loon Lake when his plane veered sharply to the right and crashed about 11 a.m., according to a news release from the Otter Tail County Sheriff's Office.
Spiekermeier was not hurt, but the plane was totaled, the release stated.
Spiekermeier, who has 15 years of flying experience, said he believed there was a mechanical problem, according to the release. There were no signs of pilot impairment, the release said.
