MINOT, N.D. - Ward County led all 53 North Dakota counties in the number of collisions between vehicles and deer in 2005.

Ward County had 314 reported vehicle-deer collisions last year, down from 340 in 2004, the state Department of Transportation said. The county reported 360 vehicle-deer collisions in 2003.

The county has led the state in vehicle-deer collisions since 1999, the first year the statistics were recorded.

Ramsey County ranked second in the state last year with 228 deer collisions. Burleigh County reported 216 accidents involving deer.

The number of reported vehicle-deer collisions last year was 3,764, down from 4,252 in 2004.

The lone fatality involving a collision with a deer last year occurred in Stark County, officials said. Two fatalities were reported in 2004.

Ward County has recorded more than 50 vehicle-deer crashes so far this year, compared to 36 for all of January 2005.
