Weather Talk: 70-degree days in March rarity in Fargo-Moorhead

Some people were understandably disappointed that our temperature just missed hitting 70 degrees on Tuesday. But 70-degree days in March are somewhat rare in Fargo-Moorhead.

Some people were understandably disappointed that our temperature just missed hitting 70 degrees on Tuesday. But 70-degree days in March are somewhat rare in Fargo-Moorhead.

In the 25 years I have been watching the weather here, there have only been three 70-degree days in March. It hit 76 degrees on March 29, 1986. In 2003, there were two days at 73 degrees: March 23 and March 31.

The earliest 70-degree day on record was March 17, 1968, when it was 73 degrees.

There are a couple of noteworthy close calls. On March 5, 2000, it was 67 degrees, and on Feb. 25, 1958, it was 66 degrees.

The average first 70-degree day is April 18.

There was one instance of 80-degree weather during March. On March 23, 1910, the temperature did hit 80 degrees. But be careful what you wish for: The Red River actually stopped flowing during the spring and summer of 1910 due to the severe drought, and the hot, dry weather caused massive crop failures.
