A year ago, the area had just finished up a stretch of four days with off-and-on snowfall. Those four days brought an additional 8 inches of snow, bringing the seasonal total to 46 inches in Fargo-Moorhead.
Almost all of last winter's snow fell during a seven-week stretch from Christmas through early February.
At this time last year, we had no idea that our snow season was essentially over, other than a dusting during the overnight hours of Feb. 20-21. No measurable snow fell after Feb. 21, leaving March through May 2010 as the
only spring in the record books with no measurable snowfall recorded.
We live in a highly fickle climate, with long stretches either with or without precipitation.

Another snow-free spring this year would be highly unlikely, yet the lesson from last winter is that just when it seems as if it will never stop snowing, it is possible for the snow to suddenly stop.
