Weather, by nature, is prone to extremes. Here in Fargo- Moorhead, weather is especially prone to extremes because of our location in the center of North America, always near the stormy jet stream and so far from the modifying effects of any oceans.
A certain degree of extremes is normal. Temperature, for example, is rarely exactly average. Throughout history, a winter temperature of 30 below in Fargo-Moorhead has occurred at an average rate of about one every two winters. In summer, a temperature of 100 degrees has occurred at about the same rate.
However, over the past two decades, our weather has had less extreme hot weather and a little more extreme cold weather. Since 1990, there have only been three days of 100 degrees or higher, but there have been 14 days of 30 below or lower.
