What a difference there is between this spring and last spring.

One year ago today, there was still 5 inches of the winter snowpack on the ground. It was rapidly melting and would be gone within a few more days, but the weather was nowhere near as mild as most of this spring has been. In 2011, our first 70-degree day happened on April 29, as opposed to March 16 this year.

Last spring, the Red River crested at Fargo on April 9 at 38.75 feet. This year, it crested below flood stage on March 18.

Last year, we had three more measurable snows to come. It snowed 2.4 inches on April 15, another 1.7 inches on April 18, and a final 0.6 inch on the night of April 30. We woke up on May Day with snow covering the ground. This year, although some snow is likely to fall at some point this month, and although April will not likely bring temperatures as much above average as we had in March, it will almost certainly be a much better April than last year.
