The last few days have brought afternoon temperatures into the 50s. All of a sudden, it feels like spring.
The difference is that our snowpack has essentially all melted. Although large piles remain in Fargo-Moorhead in shady places, grass is beginning to show.
But more importantly, across the Red River Valley, fields are no longer white with snow. At the moment, a lot of them are covered in water or, at least, highly saturated.
This condition is much better for warming up than highly reflective, white snow. However, the presence of so much water does have a cooling effect.
Over the next one to two weeks, as the fields dry, it is very likely we will experience our first 70-degree day. And once the top couple of inches of soil is dry, it will be possible for temperatures to reach the 80s and even the 90s. On April 21, 1980, it was 100 degrees in Fargo-Moorhead.
