Late-winter, early spring weather can be hard on the human psyche. Our weather never just gradually warms up into spring. Spring, instead, comes in with a sequence of false starts, each of which teases us with what is not quite ours to be had just yet.
This spring, early March brought an unexpected mild spell and a rapid snowmelt, but the next couple of weeks look cooler. A late-winter snowstorm can really be a setback for spring and for those of us waiting for it.
In March 2007, a foot of snow depth melted away quickly, and temperatures rose into the 50s and 60s over the last week and half of the month. But 6 inches of snow in early April started a nearly two-week period of freezing weather. Spring eventually came in 2007, as it always does. Our first 80-degree day happened April 28, and temperatures got as warm as 99 degrees in July 2007.
Spring always happens eventually, but the anticipation can be trying.
