Weather Talk: This spring may set record if F-M doesn't get any snow

We have not recorded any measurable snow in Fargo- Moorhead since Feb. 21, when 0.2 inches was measured from a brief period of light snow that morning.

We have not recorded any measurable snow in Fargo- Moorhead since Feb. 21, when 0.2 inches was measured from a brief period of light snow that morning.

This means we have not recorded any accumulating snow in climatological spring, which began March 1. This is a significant shift from the past two years, with 2009 and 2008 ranking as the third- and fourth-snowiest springs on record.

Since snow records began in the late 1800s, Fargo- Moorhead has never gone through the entire spring season (March through May) without some accumulating snow. We have come close, with just 0.3 inches measured in both 1981 and 1895, but this year has a good chance of breaking that record.

Looking back through the record book, Fargo-Moorhead historically has received an accumulating snow in approximately one year in four after April 15. Therefore, no guarantee, but the odds are in our favor that our next accumulating snow will be occurring during our next cold season.
