The warmest temperature of the year through March 31 was a 44-degree reading on Feb. 13. The warmest in March was a 42-degree high that occurred on four occasions.
Historically, having the warmest temperature of the year through March occurring in February is perhaps not as unusual as you may think.
Since 1881, such a feat has occurred 12 times, plus, in two years, 1908 and 1944, the warmest day of the year through March occurred in January. There were two other years having the highest temperature in January tie the highest temperature recorded in March.
Although we have experienced similar conditions to this year in the past, it has still been a stretch of noticeably cooler-than-average weather. Our average maximum temperature in March is 56 degrees; last month's maximum of 42 degrees ranked as the ninth-coldest on record for the month.
