"There is no debt so surely met, as wet to dry and dry to wet." This farmer's proverb is at least hundreds of years old and probably dates back to the first plowed field in some form or another.
Hidden in the verse is an important weather lesson: We should not expect the weather to cooperate with us. Much of the time, it is too hot, too cold, too wet, or too dry. Sometimes it is a little off. Sometimes it is way off from what is desirable. This is what weather does.
So when the weather goes bad, we should not be wondering what has gone wrong with the weather. Instead, we should recognize that droughts, floods, heat waves, and cold snaps are simply what the weather does.
Records? Those are merely clerical devices, reflecting more about the period of record than of what our weather is capable of.
