Saturday
The featured guest joining the Jazz Arts Big Band this month, Denis DiBlasio, cut his teeth with one of jazz's biggest names from the latter half of the 20th century: famed Canadian trumpeter Maynard Ferguson. DiBlasio, accomplished on baritone saxophone and flute, didn't just play with Ferguson in the mid-80s - he ended up composing and arranging much of the material. After lending his versatile talent to Ferguson's groups for five years, DiBlasio struck a similar career path as his mentor, both recording (10 solo albums) and teaching (as executive director of the Maynard Ferguson Institute of Jazz at Rowan University in New Jersey).
DiBlasio will work with some young musicians on Thursday before Saturday's two-hour show, which starts at 8 p.m. at the Fargo Theatre. Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for students. (218) 359-4529 Weekend watch: Denis DiBlasio Dave Roepke 20071108
