Today

The husband-and-wife acoustic duo Patchouli seems hardwired for restless wandering. Take the brainy singer Julie Hecksel, who graduated from high school in Illinois at age 15. Instead of stepping on the fast track to some sort of office-bound career, she hit the road, exploring places such as the Mexican rain forest and the Washington state coastline and learning to play the bass guitar. In 1993, she and husband Bruce became the duo Bruce & Julie - until an announcer confused the name of the band with the title of an early song, "Patchouli." The nomadic pair has kept up a vigorous traveling schedule, sometimes going months without a permanent address. They've also recorded nine CDs with their brand of richly melodic folk spiked with jazz and Latin notes. The duo's travels bring it to Minnesota State University Moorhead's student union today, where they play a free show at 11 a.m. (800) 593-7246
