Tonight through Saturday

The message is loud and clear in the contemporary rock musical adaptation of "Spring Awakening": These kids are not all right. The teen characters in the play, set in a German town in the late 1800s, struggle to understand their evolving bodies and the strong feelings they develop for each other. Unfortunately, the adults are more of a hindrance than a help in explaining the birds and the bees. Written by Frank Wedekind in the 1890s, the play was banned in his native Germany, but broke out on Broadway in 2006 after rock singer Duncan Sheik arranged a Tony- and Grammy-winning score. While the characters learn hard lessons about love, sex, pregnancy, abortion and abuse, the play's message is one of belonging and support - all to some memorable tunes. Show times are at 7:30 nightly through Saturday at the Gaede Stage at the Minnesota State University Moorhead Center for the Arts. Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and alumni and $10 for students. The play is recommended for mature audiences only. (218) 477-2271.
