Bob Grantham got a surprise visit from Sen. Paul Wellstone in October 1994.

And he has an autograph from Vikings legend and Minnesota Supreme Court Justice Alan Page to prove it.

Grantham told the story Friday while cutting a customer's hair at His Styling Salon in the Moorhead Center Mall.

"He (Wellstone) was here in the mall for something and he came by," Grantham recalled. "He just stopped in and introduced himself and we talked a little bit.

"Before he left, I asked, 'By chance do you know Alan Page?' And Wellstone said, 'Oh, yes. Alan is a really good friend of mine.'''

Grantham, a collector of sports memorabilia, showed Wellstone a Vikings helmet adorned with the names of football greats who played for the team: Jim Marshall, Carl Eller and longtime coach Bud Grant.

Grantham said he told Wellstone it was difficult to get a Supreme Court judge to autograph a helmet.

"And Wellstone says, 'Let me see what I can do.'

"The next thing I know," Grantham said, "he's got it (the helmet) under his arm and he's out the door."

Grantham said about two weeks later the helmet was mailed back to him, along with a letter from Wellstone, which read:

"Enclosed is your Vikings helmet, now signed by Justice Alan Page.

"He (Page) asked me to pass along his best wishes to you. I wish you luck as you add more signatures to the helmet."

Grantham said Wellstone's views were always more liberal than his own, but he voted for him anyway.

"I did vote for him because he was a people person," he said. "I do believe he really believed that what he was doing was right."
