Months of blissful car neglect came to an screeching halt Friday with the looming threat of snow.

West Fargo auto owners who park on streets or in alleys must now move their cars at least once every 24-hours -- at least until April 1. If they don't, they'll receive a warning, then a parking ticket, then an impounded car.

The parking ordinance was written to allow snow plows to more easily clear the streets.

"People ask, 'Why don't you wait until it snows?'" said West Fargo Police Chief Arland Rasmussen. "It doesn't work like that."

If it snows at 5 p.m., officers can't go knocking on people's doors, asking them to move their cars, he said.

Even without snow, street sweepers need to pick up piles of leaves, he said.

If people move their cars 10 feet, that's enough, he said.
