Wine-tasting, auction to raise garden funds

The Northern Plains Botanic Garden Society will host its third annual Autumn Wine Tasting and Silent Auction 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, in the atrium of the Neuropsychiatric Research Institute, 700 1st Ave. S., Fargo.

Proceeds support the activities of the Northern Plains Botanic Garden Society which seeks to develop a botanical garden and conservatory in the Fargo-Moorhead area.

A nonprofit support group for mothers and their children, Moms Club, will hold an open house 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Oct. 20, in the community room at West Acres Regional Shopping Center.

The community room is in the lower level in the JC Penney wing at West Acres.

The group meets monthly at Peace Lutheran Church, Fargo. This month's meeting will be at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 21.

The group provides weekly activities for mothers and their children.

Rapid City (S.D.) Society for Genealogical Research will present a seminar, "Finding the Missing Pieces to Your Puzzle," Oct. 14-15 at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.

Featured speaker is Mary E. V. Hill, a reference consultant at the LDS Family History Library in Salt Lake City.

Class subjects include using the Internet, organizing research, and understanding census records.

A North Dakota quilt and linen drive for Hurricane Katrina evacuees staying at Wind Creek State Park in Alabama will be held through Nov. 1.

Lutheran Church of the Cross and Holy Cross Catholic Church, 1402 and 1420 16th St. E, West Fargo, will collect queen-sized sheets, pillows, bath towels, bath mats and queen-sized quilts or blankets.

The park has 500 trailers that will be furnished with linens and the evacuees will be there for some time.

Coordinating the drive are Dr. Rudy and Carol Loperena of Lisbon, N.D., who will also accept linen donations at their home. For more information, call the Loperenas at (701) 683-9027.

The Fargo Moorhead branch of the American Association of University Women will take donations of used books for their annual sale at Moorhead Center Mall Oct. 28-29.

Books can be dropped off at Moorhead Center Mall in the former Tradehome Shoe store next door to Claire's Accessories.

Donations can be dropped off 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22; noon to 5 p.m. Oct. 23; 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 24 and 25; and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 26.

The book sale will be held 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Oct. 28 and 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Oct. 29. Proceeds from the sale support local and national AAUW scholarships for women.

Nearly 30 businessmen and women from the Fargo-Moorhead area will decorate cakes at Hornbacher's Foods, 1532 32nd Ave. S., Fargo. The cakes will then be auctioned to benefit Easter Seals Goodwill ND Inc.

The cake artists will work 2:30-3:30 p.m. Wednesday and the auction will begin at 4 p.m. Each cake will be paired with a donation of products or services from sponsoring businesses.

Easter Seals will use the proceeds to provide services to children and adults with disabilities or special needs.

Among the cake decorators will be Dennis Walaker, Fargo city operations manager; Mrs. North Dakota International Mary Sue Ohlhauser; Miss North Dakota International Allison Yohe; Little Miss Winter Fest; and Shawna Olson of KXJB TV.

MeritCare HealthCare Accessories will host its seventh annual Halloween costume party for physically challenged children.

The party will be held 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, at 3223 32nd Ave. S.W., Fargo.

Children under 18 are invited to register. Prizes will be awarded for the top three costumes. All children receive a prize and can participate in the costume parade.

North Dakota State University's mascot Thundar will entertain and there will be games for the whole family.

Plans are being finalized in Hatton, N.D., for a citywide celebration and all-class reunion for June 30 through July 4.

Volunteers are still being sought for the celebration, which uses the theme, "The Place to Be."

Plans include a concert, 5K walk/run, parade, children's theater production, living history tour, baseball and softball games, style show, sports auction, golf tournament, antique car show, art show, community choir concert, demolition derby, petting zoo, tractor pull and quilt display.

The Association of Filipino-Americans has picked Fargo as its headquarters as it prepares for its annual event Aug. 4-6 at the Fargo Holiday Inn.

Founded 36 years ago in Fargo, the association has moved its headquarters to various cities in North Dakota, South Dakota and western Minnesota.

The Fargo event will include a dinner and dance on Saturday and a picnic Sunday.
