A Fargo man has been sentenced for breaking into Zandbroz Variety and stealing a sandwich.

Russell F. Craig, 40, 720 8th St., pleaded guilty to two felony counts of criminal trespassing and one misdemeanor count of theft, which prosecutors had amended down from a felony burglary charge.

East Central District Judge John Irby sentenced Craig to two years of supervised probation and ordered him to take a chemical dependency evaluation and pay $150 restitution. Craig, who had spent 89 days in jail since his arrest, also had a one-year jail sentence suspended.

Court records say:

Craig broke a second-floor window March 7 to enter Zandbroz, 420 Broadway, took a sandwich from the kitchen and caused a cigarette burn on a desk. The owner of Zandbroz found Craig about 10:30 p.m. in the store's kitchen and tried unsuccessfully to grab him.

Craig left the store and broke into an upstairs apartment that belonged to his ex-wife. Police found him hiding under a tarp in a closet.
