MOORHEAD-A hair salon will soon move downtown and gain more exposure after several years in south Moorhead.

Urban Hair, 881 Belsly Blvd., will relocate to a newly walled-off space on the main floor of the Moorhead Country Greenery, 17 5th St. S., according to owner Lisa Nokken. The Moorhead native said the hair salon, which also offers manicures, pedicures and waxing and is open by appointment Monday through Saturday, will be ready to go in the new space on Wednesday, March 1.

"I wanted to be downtown in the very beginning, but I really couldn't find space that was unique enough for us," she said about opening her store in November 2009. "Then we came across this, and it was just a really good fit."

Customers can get into the salon, which will be separated from the rest of Country Greenery with an all-glass wall, by using a door along Fifth Street South or by walking through the greenery.

To make the relocation possible, Nokken worked with Matt Magness, a business consultant and regional director of the West Central Minnesota Small Business Development Center. He said he provides no-fee consulting to small businesses like hers. Magness helped Nokken successfully apply for a small enterprise loan funded by the Moorhead Economic Development Authority and West Central Initiative.

"This was a loan to help her basically be able to invest in making the move and investing in that new space to be able to fit it up the way it would work for her business," he said.

Nokken said she's taken on a new business partner, Melissa Milbeck, and they plan to hire two to four more employees as they grow the salon. The move to a downtown spot should also give Urban Hair more exposure than its current location in south Moorhead that's not visible from Eighth Street South, she said.

Alma Cater, owner of Country Greenery and the Moorhead building it's been in since 1985, said it'll be the second hair salon in the site. Uptown Hair Co. is already upstairs, while Urban Hair will take over a newly walled-off space on the main floor that will still be visible from the store.

"It'll be a nice complement to things Country Greenery does and to what the Uptown Hair Co. does upstairs," Cater said.

Cater also owns a south Fargo building, 2901 13th Ave. S., where Country Greenery has another store.
