Minn. man identified after divers recover his body in Mississippi River

ST. CLOUD, Minn. -- With the help of sonar equipment, divers on Tuesday night, May 8, recovered the body of a man last seen Monday afternoon entering the Mississippi River, starting to swim and going under about halfway across.

The Stearns County Sheriff’s Department identified the man Wednesday afternoon as Shannon David Shaw, 49, of Waite Park.

According to a release from the Stearns County Sheriff’s Department, witnesses saw the man submerge and called authorities, who then contacted the Stearns County Dive Team. They began an initial assessment and surveyed the area by using sonar of where the man was last observed. Various searches until 8:45 p.m. were unsuccessful.

On Tuesday, divers resumed the search. Tom Crossmon of Crossmon Consulting assisted with a side scan sonar array about 2:30 p.m. and identified a location for divers about 7:30 p.m. A dive team then located the man’s body a short while later, the sheriff’s department said.

A death investigation was initiated by Stearns County Investigators. Shaw’s body was transported to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.
