FARGO — Campers are getting ready for another busy summer as COVID restrictions ease.
The Red River Valley Campgrounds will be one of the first to open on April 1st and staff is saying demand has their phones ringing every day.
Right now, in late March, the campground is nearly empty, but Breann Lenzmeier, the marketing director for the Red River Valley Campgrounds, says this is the only time they'll have space all summer.
"I would say we get many phone calls a day about 'When is our campground opening?', 'What is the rate of the campground?'. A lot of people are planning their trips and planning to be in the Red River Valley partaking in a lot of events and staying out here." Lenzmeier says.
For camper Steven Kidder, it's bringing back swimming events that brought him to the Fargo area.
"I left home a couple weeks ago, went down to Cheeks, Oklahoma, went over to Bristol, went to Toledo and now I'm here," Kidder says.
He was able to get a spot at the Red River Campgrounds before it opens for his RV. It's how he always gets from swim meet to meet.
Kidder plans to participate in the Olympic pre-trials later in the summer.
"So many things have been closed so at least with camping you are outside so you have your social distancing, and you have your own space. You're not staying in a motel where you don't know whose been there before you. You have your own bed, everything. So self isolation is so much easier," Kidder says.
He isn't the only one looking to camp, Lenzmeier says they're expecting to be full all summer.
"More people out here than we have had in the past, just because people have missed it for so long," she says.
The Red River Valley Fair is also returning for 10 days. It is expected to start on July 9th.
Fargo Parks District say they're also expecting a busy camping season. You can start reserving those spots on May 1st.
